Theft of vehicles

There are a number of steps you can take to help prevent someone from stealing your vehicle:

  • Always lock the doors and roll up the windows tightly
  • Never leave your keys in an unattended vehicle, even for a quick errand
  • Don't hide spare keys - they can be found.

If your vehicle is stolen, report the theft to the police immediately. The police will need a complete description including:

  • year
  • make
  • model
  • colour
  • vehicle
  • identification Number
  • plate number
  • ignition key number
  • insurance company
  • policy number
  • agent/broker
  • telephone
  • any outstanding features, dents, scratches
  • contents of the vehicle (e.g., stereo system, tools, etc.)

The OPS crime prevention brochure for vehicle owners contains useful information and contact numbers in the event that your vehicle is stolen.
