Get others involved

Fear of the unknown can divide communities, such as fear of people with different cultures, religions and languages; people with disabilities; young people or the elderly; and people who might just look or act a bit different. Get to know these people. Everyone has something to offer your community, and it is only through getting to know them that you can rid your neighbourhood of these fears and build stronger communities.

The lesson? Cast a wide net when planning a community event or initiative. Approach everyone—parents, seniors, young people, newcomers, friends and colleagues all have something to contribute.

Strong, inclusive and collaborative partnerships are key to building better neighbourhoods. Be welcoming of different people. Their skills and opinions will help open the doors for everyone to contribute and to learn new things. Bringing together people from all ages, stages and walks of life helps break down barriers and bridge the gaps between all of us.
